Medicaid
Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that provides health coverage to eligible low-income individuals and families. Understanding how it works — and how it interacts with Medicare — can help you access the care you need.
Medicaid Eligibility
Eligibility for Medicaid is based on income, household size, age, disability status, and other factors. Each state administers its own Medicaid program within federal guidelines, so eligibility rules and covered services vary by state. In Texas, the program is called Texas Medicaid.
Medicare and Medicaid Together (Dual Eligibility)
If you qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, you're considered 'dual eligible.' Medicaid can help pay for Medicare premiums, deductibles, and copays, and may cover services Medicare doesn't — like long-term care, dental, and vision. Special plans called Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) are designed specifically for dual-eligible beneficiaries.
