Accident Insurance

Accident insurance is a type of supplemental health insurance that provides a lump-sum cash payment to you or your family if you suffer an injury from a covered accident. The benefits from accident insurance are intended to cover out-of-pocket expenses, such as deductibles, copays, or other costs not fully covered by a standard health insurance plan, allowing you to pay for medical bills, rehabilitation, or other daily living expenses as you recover.

How it works

  • Lump-sum payments: Instead of paying medical providers directly, the plan pays a cash benefit to you after you file a claim.
  • Use of funds: You can use the cash benefit for anything you need, including medical treatment, hospital costs, physical therapy, or even non-medical expenses like transportation or household help.
  • Coverage varies: The specific types of injuries and treatments covered, as well as the payout amounts, depend on the specific plan.

Key features

  • Supplemental: Accident insurance is designed to work alongside, not replace, your primary health insurance.
  • Easy enrollment: Proof of good health is often not required for enrollment, and coverage can sometimes be purchased through an employer, an association, or directly from an insurance company.
  • Family coverage: Some policies allow you to extend coverage to your spouse and children.

What it covers Accident insurance can cover costs for:

  • Hospital stays and admissions
  • Emergency room visits
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Medical tests, X-rays, and scans
  • Specific injuries like fractures, lacerations, or concussions.
